Dave - Congratulations on a job well done. Between 4th and 5th grade, there aren't that many of us guy classroom teachers left. I believe you've now left me all alone. Would you please reconsider? If not, I'm sure you've got a sweet automobile or two you can devote your energies to. Just don't let the hailstorms get to your car before you do (circa 1999 or 2000). Happy retirement!

Enjoy your retirement!!

District 67 is losing a wonderful and talented teacher..... and Sue is gaining a lot more time with a great guy! Thanks for everything you've given to all of the students and fellow teachers throughout the years, Dave. Your former students all rave about you when they come to DPM, and rightfully so.
You'll have a huge amount of wonderful memories to look back upon in throughout your retirement..... like two hour long faculty meetings after school with Mr. Cimfel (before the advent of daily email sessions!), student / faculty softball games at the end of the year, the rainstorm in October 1986 that stranded all of us at school into the wee hours, teaching Meology lessons (thanks Barb) and Study Skills lessons (thanks Karen Bacha) and growth development lessons (thanks wellness staff for grabbing that one from us!!!) and a bunch of electricity lessons and the annual chat with Dr. Klingenberg at the end of every school year and the district holiday parties with the Melands' band playing and the merit pay system without the pay part and being one of the rare people who actually know who May van Auken, Norm Erickson and Jim Peck actually are when they give the awards, and the birth of the LFEA and your way fun Halloween party and the incomparable Dorothy Zwicki the teaching nun and the traditional holiday toast on the second floor the day before holiday break and Rosemary's chiming bell before announcements and so much more!!!! Relax, enjoy and hike many trails, visit many parks and catch many fish! You deserve it all! Great job, Dave!!!

PS If I'm not at your reception I have a previously scheduled art club meeting the 17th from 3:30-5, will try to swing by afterward. Do you remember your illustrious LFI colleagues John and Cam Radzinski, Mike Leppin, Maureen Horrel, Karen Bacha, Deb Smith, Jim Grace, Dorothy Zywicki, Jim Glacking, Denny and Diane Bruns (Taylor), Nancy Gordon, Jerry Matyus, Deb Cross (singing at the holiday parties with Scott and Rita Meland), Patsy Faust, Mimi Pinney, Ann Ness and a few others I'm sure that I forgot ??!!!! Aaaahhhh David! I am so jealous! But, enough of that, let's do a little jaunt down memory lane.
*Remember sharing an office with me at DPI?
*Remember your little green MG?
*Remember your roomie, David S. who now is my teammate?
*Remember the Christmas celebrations you male teachers held in John Radzinski's room? (And yes, back then it was Christmas.)
*Remember jamming to country music with Mrs. Baldwing?
*Remember Atwood? (You may be trying to forget this.)
Remember Sue and I finding "Sweet and Innocent"? (I'll bet Sue does.)
Oh, so many fun memories we share. I hope you are smiling as you read this. I fondly remember them all. You were a blast to teach with. I wish you the very best in your "endless summer vacation."

Thank you Mr. Knowling for making our daughter's last year at Sheridan so enjoyable. We really appreciate how much you truly care about the kids. Lily has absolutely loved having you for a teacher! You've made her learn and laugh at the same time. You have a real gift and we'll be sorry to see you go but we are very happy to think of you riding off on your motorcycle into the next chapter.

Congratulations, Dave! Thanks for paving the way for those of us just behind you in years. Thanks to Brian and Deb for listing so many memories. It honestly does not seem possible that it was over 30 years ago when we were teaching 6th grade together. How can that be? I recall our times together working on our administrative type 75 and helping out Jim Cimfel with interesting adm duties - student discipline, field day plans, etc. It is probably best that we ended up in the classroom where we really were able to make a difference in so many children's lives. Fourth graders and their families always speak so highly of you when they cautiously enter DPM. Enjoy all the years ahead minus the lesson plans, grading and writing report cards. Add traveling, sleeping in and running errands in the middle of the day. Take care and have fun!!!!

Woohoo! 'Tis a milestone event for a great educator and genuinely great guy. This is a time to plan the best of fun that you can have---if it's not fun, don't do it! Make a list of all of those things that you've wanted to try, places that you've wanted to see, and get started!
One of the dearest remembrances related to you and who you are came from a former student of mine who was enjoying a year with you. She went on and on about how much she appreciated you as a teacher and then said, "Sometimes I wish he was my dad." Sweet.
Happy times ahead!!!

Dave,
Congratulations on your retirement!! It seems like yesterday we were all working at LFI and enjoying everyones company. You were a great teacher to work with! I still remember going on the same cruise as you and Sue. Neal and I really enjoyed spending time with the two of you while we were traveling in paradise. That said, you will be sorely missed, but retirement is a wonderful journey ahead for you. Embrace sleeping late, doing what you want to when you want to, making an appointment any time during the day, and traveling whenever you know its time to take a break from the weather. These are all benefits of retirement. Enjoy every minute and keep us posted on what you are doing. Again, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Dave,
Of course, we share many memories of our years together at DPM which later moved across town to become LFI. Of course, you will always be teased about the time you ran out in the middle of the hailstorm to drape your body over your new powder blue vintage VW bug. At another time I was sincerely grateful to you when you became a "teacher recruit" during a show at LFI. If I remember correctly, you and Marge Glacking were asked to strut around the gym clucking as chickens. You were such a great sport and I was so grateful that I was not commandeered to go down. Also, we were grateful that your were our LFEA building rep at LFI.
I have just one little warning. Retirement is not what it is cracked up to be. It is so much better!! It's not just sleeping late or not having papers to correct. It is the TOTAL freedom to be in complete control of your life (with Sue's help, of course.) If you don't want to do something, YOU DON'T!! (Once again check with Sue.) All the best, Dave. It was a pleasure to work with you.

Mr. Knowling! It's been 2 decades since I have seen you, but the year I had you as a teach for 4th grade (1991-1992) left an indelable mark on me. I remember your dedication to teaching all, regardless of proficiency, and for your caring demeanor. I wish you well in your retirement and thank you for all of your guidance that year of my life.

Hi Dave!
Congratulations on your retirement! I hope that you enjoy every minute of your new adventure. After a few months, you'll wonder how you ever had time to work. When September comes, you will continue to do summer things because September is a summer month. But, wait until the first Monday of January. You can look out at the snow and cold and enjoy the peace of not having to go anywhere unless you want to. Best of everything to you and Sue!
By the way, if you're ever near Rockford, take a quiet walk around Atwood Park. It really is a peaceful place.

I am hoping that you are still checking these messages as I know I am a little late in posting this. I was trying to remember Bill Goodson's name, as I will never forget your impersonating him on that video roasting me on my fortieth birthday. It was hysterically funny. Can't believe how long ago that was as I am now 67.
I do have lots of other memories of our working together. Both Bob and I wish you well in retirement. It is well deserved.
Hope you will take a drive to Woodstock some day and get together with us. Hello to Sue.
Have fun in this next chapter of your life !

Hey Dave,

There is no way I'm going to allow Maureen last dibs! Chris B. was kind enough to share with me that you are finishing your teaching career and I want to wish you and Sue a happy next part of your journey.

I enjoyed visiting with everyone through your entries! And now, I imagine you enjoying that morning brew with your feet up.

I on the other hand, continue to truck into a Jr. High Classroom. :-)

Congrats. Eileen
